Living lagom is a Swedish philosophy of moderation, and it's all about finding the balance between enough and too much. It's not about living life on the edge or going wild but about knowing when to set boundaries and how to take care of yourself so that you can enjoy life without feeling guilty or overworked.
The word "lagom" translates roughly as "just right," which makes sense when you think about how hard it can be to find that sweet spot between too much and too little in any area of your life.
I grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, so I am very familiar with living a lagom life. But it does not mean I prefer doing that today. Living a lagom life could be stifling and does not invite risk-taking. Sometimes we need to do things that aren't necessarily lagom and if you're not taking risks, your life will be pretty dull.
I went to IKEA the other day and bought some Christmas decorations. I thought I bought the right size of an advent star with a stand but when I put it up today, it turned out to be super large. The first thought that came to mind was excessive and am I overdoing this? This is part of the living lagom, not standing out too much or too little. But then I thought, darn it, I will not listen to that lagom voice. Because being lagom feels like living in a cage. What if I want more? What if I want to go for it? What if I want to live large? So the star will stay and shine bright even if it is early to put up Christmas decorations! ;)
